Vanguard Defeats NAIA’s No. 2-Ranked Tennis Team

Olli Helminen swept 6-4, 6-3, and Peter Skrzeczynski swept 6-2, 6-3, to help visiting Vanguard (13-2) to a 5-4 victory over second-ranked Flager (Fla.) in NAIA men’s tennis Wednesday.

Skrzeczynski teamed with Josef Stromberg to win 8-5 in doubles, the match-clinching victory for the Eagles.

In nonconference softball:

Northwestern 5, Cal State Fullerton 2--Brett Nakabayashi stole third and came home on a throwing error by Fullerton catcher Michelle Lehr to break a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning as visiting Northwestern (9-12) went on to defeat the 11th-ranked Titans (24-7).

Washington 9, Cal State Fullerton 0--Kim DePaul was three-for-three with two home runs and three RBIs, and Jennifer Spediacci gave up one hit in five innings and struck out seven for the visiting Huskies (33-2) at Cal State Fullerton.

Kristy Osborne and Jessica Maloney had the only hits for the Titans (24-6).
