Sherman Claims 200th Victory at Northridge

Janet Sherman earned her 200th softball victory at Cal State Northridge last week at the Kia Classic.

The milestone was especially noteworthy because it came against seventh-ranked Fresno State.

“I’m ecstatic to get my 200th victory,” said Sherman, the ninth coach in Big West Conference history to reach the plateau.

Before a doubleheader Thursday night at Fresno State, Sherman’s record was 200-111-3 in six seasons.

SWIMMING

* Senior Aron Gyuris of Thousand Oaks High is off to a fast start in the Speedo Junior Championships’ west regional this week in Anchorage, Alaska.

Gyuris, swimming for Conejo Simi Aquatics, placed sixth with a time of 1:52.86 in the men’s 200-yard butterfly.

The second-place finisher in the 100-yard freestyle at the Southern Section Division I Championships last spring, Gyuris placed seventh in the same event with a time of 46.61 seconds.

Grace Peterson, a junior at Ventura High who competes for Buenaventura Swim Club, placed ninth in the women’s 1,000 freestyle with a time of 10:08.97.

Clemson-bound Travis Taylor of Crescenta Valley High, a member of The Times’ 1999 all-region team, placed 11th in the men’s 1,000 freestyle in 9:27.85.

Jana Richardson, a junior at Ventura High with the Buenaventura Swim Club, was 11th in the women’s 100 freestyle in 52.66. Keiko Amano of Villanova Prep and Buenaventura Swim Club was 14th in the event at 52.97.

Tyler Clark of Granada Hills High finished 19th in the men’s 200 butterfly at 1:54.57.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

* Jason Rosenthal of Agoura was selected co-Coach of the Year along with Mark Walsh of Santa Barbara, and four Chargers were chosen to the All-Southern Section Division II team.

Joanna Antonsen, Erika Clark and De De Perram and goalkeeper Michelle Rozzen helped Agoura finish second to Santa Barbara in the Division II playoffs.

Lauren O’Brien of Ventura also was selected to the team.

Senior Thalia Munro of Santa Barbara was player of the year.

Cameron Pearce and Colleen Schiman of Agoura were on the second team and Chelsey Hutchinson was on the third team.

Goalkeeper Erin Enriquez of Rio Mesa, Katherine Bylo of Ventura, Courtney Yoder of Oxnard and Paige Wilson of Buena were selected to the third team.

SOCCER

* Dudley Hitchman, women’s coach at The Master’s College, has left the school to work for the Galaxy.

Hitchman compiled a 21-39-1 record with the Mustangs.

Athletic Director Bill Oates is taking applications for the job.
