FISH REPORT

FRESHWATER

LOS ANGELES COUNTY

CASTAIC LAKE--Largemouth bass are active in both lakes. A 14-pound 3-ounce bass was caught at the lower lake on a water dog. A few large stripers are being caught on plugs. Some bluegills.

PYRAMID LAKE--Trout, largemouth and smallmouth bass are providing lots of action. An occasional striped bass is being caught too.

VENTURA COUNTY

LAKE PIRU--Largemouth bass are active at about 15 feet and being taken on crankbaits and plastics, but the bite is fair at best. The trout bite is subsiding, too, although trollers fishing deep near the dam are getting some.

LAKE CASITAS--Not a bad place to drop a line as bass to about 10 pounds, catfish and trout are all cooperating to a fair degree.

ORANGE COUNTY

OSO RESERVOIR--Bass fishing is great and catfish action is fair. Double-digit bass scores have been posted all week, and a few of the bigger fish--to about eight pounds--are starting to bite. Crankbaits, plastics and spinnerbaits are working.

LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE--The catfish opener is today, and night fishing is available on Fridays and Saturdays. Trout catches have dropped off. Bass action is fair and 1,000 pounds of catchable crappies were stocked on Monday.

IRVINE LAKE--Big trout are still biting. Several weighed in at 10 pounds or more, most coming from Santiago Flats on lures and live bait.

SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES--A 16-4 trout was the largest of several lunkers landed in the last week. Catfish season opens May 18.

SANTA BARBARA COUNTY

LAKE CACHUMA--Trout to about four pounds are biting on worms and Power Bait. Bass have gone deep but a few are being caught. Red-ear perch action is fair on night crawlers.

SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY

JESS RANCH LAKES--Trout to about four pounds are the best thing going and limits are not too hard to come by using standard stuff. Some bass and catfish.

RIVERSIDE COUNTY

LAKE PERRIS--Bass are active at the east end, but the bigger fish are being caught only sporadically on live bait and swim-baits. Small plastic worms are best for the smaller fish.

CORONA LAKE--The little lake produced a whopper trout weighing 21-3. Catfish, crappies and bluegills are getting active too. Catfish season opens May 18.

LAKE SKINNER--Striped bass are on the feed and being taken on chicken livers and surface plugs.

SAN DIEGO COUNTY

DIXON LAKE--Bass fishing is slow to fair, but trout fishing is good. A 13-pound bass was caught, however, and several trout weighed five pounds or more.

LAKE POWAY--Trout and bass are active and limits of both are not uncommon. Trout to about seven pounds are biting, mostly on night crawlers.

SAN DIEGO CITY LAKES--A 14-12 bass at Hodges highlights a good week at all the bass lakes. It was caught on a shiner. The bluegill bite at Otay and San Vicente is starting. Murray and Miramar are still yielding trout.

LAKE WOHLFORD--Largemouth bass weighed in at 10-4 (plastic worm); 9-5 (night crawler) and 6-9 (purple plastic worm). A 7-10 rainbow trout (night crawler) was also on the list.

EASTERN SIERRA

The pace has slowed, but the fishing hasn’t. Crowley Lake is yielding excellent catches of mostly one-pound rainbows. June Lake produced a 10-1 rainbow for Bill Denault, Bishop. Gull Lake yielded an 8-12 rainbow for Bob Gebo, Thousand Oaks. You can’t go wrong anywhere except perhaps the small streams, where increased runoff has things moving a bit too fast.

MORRO BAY (Virg’s Landing)--17 anglers ( 1 boat): 21 sand bass, 61 calico bass, 51 barracuda.

AVILA BEACH (Patriot Sportfishing)--9 anglers (1 boat): 6 rockfish, 30 bolina.

SANTA BARBARA (Sea Landing)--25 anglers (1 boat): 19 calico bass, 130 barracuda.

OXNARD (Cisco’s)--53 anglers (3 boats): 1 white sea bass, 100 calico bass, 85 barracuda, 3 halibut, 5 red snapper, 40 rockfish, 7 sculpin.

PORT HUENEME--22 anglers (2 boats): 3 calico bass, 1 sheephead, 21 barracuda, 15 halibut, 6 rockfish, 2 sculpin, 110 white fish.

MARINA DEL REY--54 anglers (3 boats): 4 halibut, 124 calico bass, 15 sand bass, 7 sculpin.

REDONDO BEACH--14 anglers (1 boat): 140 barracuda, 58 calico bass, 1 halibut.

SAN PEDRO (L.A. Harbor Sportfishing)--124 anglers (6 boats): 52 yellowtail, 5 white sea bass, 338 calico bass, 30 barracuda, 10 sheephead, 19 whitefish, 28 blue perch, 79 sand bass. (22nd St. Landing)--98 anglers (4 boats): 49 yellowtail, 15 white sea bass, 276 calico bass, 35 barracuda, 20 sand bass, 50 blue perch, 15 whitefish, 11 sheephead, 3 sculpin.

LONG BEACH (Sportfishing/Berth 55)--56 anglers (3 boats): 21 yellowtail, 63 barracuda, 257 calico bass, 26 sand bass, 6 sculpin, 30 white fish, 2 black sea bass. (Marina Sportfishing)--26 anglers (1 boat): 69 barracuda, 8 sand bass, 5 sculpin, 2 yellowfin croaker. (Pierpoint Landing)--100 anglers (4 boats): 18 yellowtail, 11 white sea bass, 7 barracuda, 73 calico bass, 39 sand bass, 353 rockfish, 1 white fish, 5 sculpin, 6 sheephead, 3 halibut, 1 cow cod, 9 sargo.

NEWPORT BEACH (Newport Landing)--29 anglers (3 boats): 6 barracuda, 88 calico bass, 4 sand bass, 3 sculpin, 1 sheephead, 4 white fish, 18 blue perch, 25 mackeral, 1 opal eye.
