Hauser-Price Running on Cruise Control

Sierra Hauser-Price of Notre Dame High had everything under control.

The junior even wore a rubber band around her left arm to help her focus on the business at hand.

So it was no surprise that Hauser-Price came through with one of her best efforts of the season in the Mission League track and field finals Friday at Cal State Northridge.

She won the 100 meters in 12.14 seconds and the 200 in 24.63 against the wind. She also ran legs on Notre Dame’s winning 400 and 1600 relay teams.

Hauser-Price didn’t finish with a meet record. In fact, there weren’t any meet records established on a cool, overcast day.

But she was happy with the results. She matched her season best in the 100, which she established at the FloJo Memorial Arcadia Invitational in April.

“I feel like I ran well, all things considered,” Hauser-Price said. “I wish I could’ve run better, but I take into account that I didn’t run against anybody.”

She expects the competition to improve considerably in the Southern Section Division III prelims next Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut.

“I’m still working on improving, but I’m happy with where I’m at and I’m pretty confident now,” Hauser-Price said.

The same could be said for many of her Notre Dame teammates who also turned in impressive performances Friday.

Sophomore Tracy Johnson came through with a season-best time of 47.35 to win the girls’ 300 intermediate hurdles. She also won the 100 highs in 16.09.

Johnson finished second in the high jump at 5-0.

Freshman Eghasa Isa of Notre Dame also won two events, taking the 400 in 1:00.86 and the long jump at 15-10.

Among the most impressive boys for Notre Dame was Jon Williams, who won the 110 high hurdles in 15.16 and the 300 intermediates in 39.54.

Notre Dame’s Travis Johnson, Tracy’s older brother, had few problems in the shotput and discus throw. He won the shotput with a toss of 56-5 3/4--more than eight feet farther than his closest competitor--and easily took the discus at 135-1.

In his first competition in more than two weeks, Darren Quinn of Notre Dame won the 800 in 1:57.04.

Teammate Chris Shibel finished first in the triple jump (44-0 1/2) and third in the high jump (5-10).

Among other top boys, Derek Goodman of Alemany won the 100 (11.09) and finished second in the 200 (22.46), Wayne Collett of Harvard-Westlake finished first in the pole vault (13-6) and Robert Kubler of Crespi took the 3200 (9:51.44).

Among the girls, Cassandra Goodson of Chaminade captured the 1,600 in 5:25.30, finished second in the 3200 and third in the 800, and Priscilla Reynado of Flintridge Sacred Heart won the pole vault (9-0).
