HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL

La Reina 4, Paraclete 2--It was fitting that La Reina pitcher Kristen Ward escaped a bases-loaded jam in the eighth inning to preserve the Regents’ victory in the championship game of the Desert Diamond Classic at Lancaster City Park. She worked out of trouble all day. Paraclete stranded eight runners and left the bases loaded twice.

Ward pitched a 4-0 victory over Alemany in the semifinals and had 25 minutes to rest before the championship game. It was the first time all season she pitched two games in the same day.

“I threw a lot of pitches in the first game, but I still felt good so I told my coach that I was OK if he needed me,” said Ward, who will attend Cal State Northridge.
