Woodbridge Advances to Semifinals

After losing the first game, Woodbridge responded with three straight victories to defeat San Marcos Friday in the quarterfinals of the Southern Section Division II boys’ volleyball playoffs.

Woodbridge (13-5) struggled initially, dropping the first game, 15-11. The Warriors responded with 15-1, 15-6 and 15-12 victories.

Woodbridge’s Scott Sebek had a game-high 20 kills and 10 digs and Jason Liljestrom had 53 assists, seven blocks and 17 digs. Adam Bremner and Casey Armstrong finished with 13 kills each, and Jordan Winder had 12 digs for Woodbridge, which will play Mater Dei in the semifinals Wednesday.

In other Division II matches:

Mater Dei 3, Goleta Dos Pueblos 0--Brian Costanvo and Brandt Wicke had 15 kills each to help the Monarchs sweep, 15-8, 15-9, 15-2. Mater Dei is 11-4.

Santa Barbara 3, Foothill 0--Ty Coleman and Matt Mendel each had seven kills for visiting Foothill (14-3), which lost, 15-9, 15-2, 15-10.

In Division III:

Whittier Christian 3, Ojai Villanova Prep 1--Tim Layton registered 31 kills and Andrew Rahm contributed 49 assists as the Heralds (23-6) won, 12-15, 15-5, 15-11, 15-7. Steve Ziemans added nine kills.
