Virginia Commonwealth (27-4) and Stanford (27-1) advanced to the finals of the men’s team championships at Athens, Ga. Virginia Commonwealth trailed Tennessee, 4-3, but won when two Volunteer players retired because of cramps. Stanford shut out Florida, 4-0, but was forced to three sets in all but one of its singles matches.

In Division III:

Tranckino advances--Amy Tranckino, a freshman at UC San Diego who graduated from Dana Hills, reached the quarterfinals in singles at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn.

Tranckino defeated Ellen Anderson of Gustavus Adolphus, 6-0, 7-6, then got past Erin Eggers of Washington & Lee, 6-3, 0-6, 6-2. Tranckino will meet Karen Lui of the University of Chicago today, with the winner advancing to the semifinals later in the day.

Tranckino also advanced to the quarterfinals in doubles with partner Lyndsey Tadlock.

In the NAIA national championships:

Vanguard draws bye--The Vanguard men’s tennis team drew a bye in the first round Monday and will face Oklahoma Christian in the second round today at Asbury (Ky.) College. Vanguard is seeded fifth in the tournament.
