SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Javon Smith’s Pacifica jersey was ripped in two places, covered in dirt and even had a few blood stains, but his face had a wide smile as he talked about the Mariners’ 24-13 victory over Rancho Alamitos Thursday at Garden Grove High.

The victory clinched the Garden Grove League title and No. 1 berth into the Southern Section playoffs for Pacifica (6-4, 5-1 in league). Garden Grove, which lost to Pacifica this season, beat Bolsa Grande also Thursday to earn a share of the title and the league’s No. 2 berth.

Smith rushed for 197 yards and scored two touchdown in 42 carries. His performance was also important because it kept Rancho Alamitos’ explosive offensive off the field.

Smith had more carries than Rancho Alamitos had plays (38).

Smith scored from a yard out in the first quarter, then scored from 28 yards with 4 minutes 28 seconds left in the third quarter to put Pacifica up 21-7. Besides the 28-yard touchdown, Smith had only two other carries that went for more than 10 yards.

“They were tough yards against a tough Rancho Alamitos defense,” Smith said, “but we had to get it done.”

Rancho Alamitos (5-4-1, 3-2-1) showed its ability to score in a hurry when quarterback Daniel Green hooked up with Maurice Garcia for a 67-yard touchdown pass to cut the Pacifica lead to 21-13 with 2:51 left in the third quarter.

The defense also added a touchdown for Pacifica on a 28-yard interception return by lineman Ryan Kiaha. Teammate Alfonso Auelua had his arms around the legs of Green, who was falling. His desperation pass went right to Kiaha.

“I just happened to be right there and caught it,” said Kiaha, who also had two sacks.
