Garden Grove Grabs a Share of League Title

Garden Grove’s offense pounded the ball on the ground and its defense forced several turnovers en route to a 21-0 victory over Bolsa Grande Thursday night.

The Argonauts threw the ball only six times the entire game.

“That’s our game,” Garden Grove Coach Kris Van Hook said. “It’s what has gotten us this far, so we’ll stick with it.”

Garden Grove (6-3-1 overall, 5-1) tied for first with Pacifica in the Garden Grove League standings, but because the Argonauts lost to the Mariners, 42-0, in the first week of league play, they receive the league’s No. 2 berth into the Division IX playoffs.

Garden Grove capped off its 44-yard drive with 5:44 left in the first quarter when Thomas Parrilla raced in from 38 yards out.

Eddie Ramos put Garden Grove in scoring position again in the third quarter when he recovered a Bolsa Grande fumble on the Matadors’ 22-yard line. Sione Taumoefolau ran in from one yard to make it 14-0.

Garden Grove picked up one more score with 6:53 remaining in the game when Adam Deneal capped a 64-yard drive with a 30-yard run.

“Last year, we were undefeated in league and then lost in the first round of the playoffs,” Van Hook said. “We’re looking for more this year.”
