Ellis’ Shot Gives Valley a Lift, 71-70

DaMarcus Ellis’ layup with a minute left gave Valley College a 71-70 men’s basketball victory over Fullerton in the first round of the Mt. San Antonio College tournament Friday night.

Valley (1-0) held a 67-62 lead with four minutes to play, but Fullerton (0-1) scored the next five points.

The score was tied again, 69-69, before Ellis scored.

The Hornets missed a shot from the baseline as time expired.

Nate Wilson scored 17 points for the Monarchs. Albert Strickland added 10 points and nine rebounds.

Oxnard 82, Antelope Valley 77--Keron Wilkerson and Chris Massie combined to hit 24 of 27 shots for the Condors in a first-round victory of the Victor Valley tournament.

Wilkerson finished with 28 points and Massie had 25 points and 12 rebounds.

Jimmy White had 26 points and six rebounds, and Bob Segeberg added 22 points and eight rebounds for Antelope Valley.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Valley 76, El Camino 64--Tynisha Howze had 15 points and 13 rebounds for the Monarchs in a first-round game of the San Diego Mesa tournament.

Tricia Ewells scored 17 points for Valley (1-0), and Michelle Tompkins added 16 points.

Ventura 76, Riverside 63--Monique Taylor scored 25 points for the Pirates (1-0) in a first-round game of the Chaffey tournament.

Irvine Valley 51, Antelope Valley 49--Tina Carillo missed a five-foot jumper as time expired for the Antelopes in a first-round game of the Santa Barbara tournament.

Kristel Jones scored 18 points and Diane Everrett had 13 rebounds for Antelope Valley (0-1), which made only 16 of 60 shots.

MEN’S TENNIS

Fourth-seeded Al Garland of Pepperdine beat Ross Bourne of San Diego, 6-0, 6-0, in the third round of the Intercollegiate Tennis Assn. Region VIII South Championships at Pepperdine.

Sebastien Graeff of Pepperdine, seeded fifth, defeated Juan Cerda of San Diego, 7-6 (1), 6-2.

Third-seeded Jean-Julien Rojer of UCLA beat Gerold Wiring of Pepperdine, 7-6 (3), 6-1, and the Bruins’ Lassi Ketola outlasted the Waves’ Chase Exon, 7-5, 3-6, 6-1.

In second-round doubles, Exon and Stefan Suter defeated Nick Carliss and Brian Kent of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo,, 8-3.

Travis Rettenmaier and Erfan Djahangiri of UCLA upset fifth-seeded Cerda and Mattias Tangefjord of San Diego, 8-6.
