The Golden West men’s and women’s water polo teams are top-seeded in the state championships, which begin today at Mt. San Antonio College.
The Rustler women (33-1), looking for their fourth consecutive state title, have not lost to a community college team this season. Their lone loss came against USC. They open the state tournament against Foothill at 8 a.m.
The men’s team (30-2) won nine consecutive state titles between 1989 and ‘97, but finished second in 1998 and third in ’99. Two-time defending state champion West Valley is seeded second.
Led by Anna Korobova and Ashley May, the Rustler women won the Southern California regional last weekend.
The Pirates (27-7-1), with goalie Erin Kennedy leading the way, are seeded second. Five of the seven Orange Coast losses have come against Golden West.
Kevin Marsh, who is fourth in Southern California with 97 goals and leads the region with 71 assists, is the Rustler men’s top player. Golden West opens against Sierra at 9:15 a.m.
The championship game for the women is Sunday at 2:30 p.m.; the men’s final is Sunday at 3:45.
