University Favored to Win Girls’ Golf Event

Share

Defending champion University is the favorite in the CIF-WSCGA Girls’ Golf Championships today at the SCGA Members’ Club in Murrieta.

Although this tournament has been widely characterized as a state championship, it is not. Only the top teams and players from the Southern, Central, San Diego and Los Angeles City sections play in it.

But no matter who is playing, University should win. The Trojans, led by junior Angela Won and senior Sunny Lee, won the Southern Section title this month by 14 strokes and won the 1999 CIF-WSCGA title by eight.

North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake, Villa Park and La Jolla Torrey Pines appear to have the best shot at defeating the Trojans.

Villa Park, with junior Priscilla Park and senior Shelly Raworth, finished 26 strokes behind the Trojans at the section finals, but were only six back at the Southern Divisional.

Aliso Niguel, led by freshman Leisl Hasbrouck, is also competing.

Harvard-Westlake’s Ina Kim, runner-up in the U.S. Girls’ Championship over the summer, is the pretournament favorite for the individual title. Top challengers will be Won, Park and last year’s runner-up Jennifer Tangtiphiboontana of Long Beach Wilson.
