No. 6 Warriors Rout El Modena

Woodbridge jumped out to a 32-15 halftime lead and cruised to a 64-32 victory over El Modena in the first round of the Taco Company Invitational Monday at Loara High.

Danny Lambert led the Warriors (1-0) with 14 points, while Aaron Szekel added 11. Tavuis Robinson led El Modena (0-1) with 13 points.

Basketball--A Woodbridge High boys’ basketball player was misidentified in a photo caption in Tuesday’s newspaper. The player is Tashaan Forehan-Kelly.

Woodbridge, ranked sixth in Orange County, will play the winner of tonight’s Loara-Costa Mesa game in the second round Thursday at 6:30. El Modena (0-1) will take on the loser of that game in the consolation round, also Thursday.

In other first-round games:

No. 3 Villa Park 82, Whittier California 54--Senior guard Matt MacGinnis made five three-pointers on his way to a game-high 22 points. Kyle Hogan and Bryce Prather each scored 10 for the Spartans (1-0).

Servite 62, Anaheim 51--Former Cal State Fullerton Coach Bob Hawking lost his first game as the Colonists’ head coach despite 28 points from Quinn Hawking, his son.

Billy Burfeind had 20 points and Sebastian Zielonka had 19 points and 14 rebounds for Servite (1-0), which faces Esperanza Wednesday in a second-round game.

In the Coyote Classic:

Kennedy 73, Rancho Alamitos 41--Rhema McKnight and Eric Aragon had 12 points each and Philip Tucker chipped in with 11 for Kennedy (1-0), which led, 38-19, at halftime in the pool-play game. Matt Smith had nine points for Rancho Alamitos (0-1).

In the Reebok/Diablo Inferno tournament:

San Clemente 78, Oceanside 76--James Hartman made an eight-foot jump shot with three seconds left to win it for San Clemente (1-0), which plays Bolsa Grande in a second-round game today.

In nonleague boys’ basketball:

Irvine 56, Santa Ana 33--Massud Naderi had 24 points, six rebounds and six assists for visiting Irvine.

No. 10 Marina 64, Santiago 33--Beau Brown made seven of 11 three-point attempts and finished with 23 points and Chris DeLuca had 13 points and 12 rebounds for host Marina (1-0).
