Ziemann Powers Chargers

Junior guard Rachael Ziemann scored 17 points and handed out six assists to help Edison to a 44-40 victory over Riverside North in the first round of the Woodbridge Tip-Off Classic Monday at Woodbridge High.

Ziemann’s twin sister, Bianca, had five points and seven rebounds for the Chargers (1-0).

Kristen Childley contributed nine points for Edison, which faces Pacifica in a second-round game at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

In other tournament games:

Oxnard 56, Mater Dei 52--Jessica Williams scored a game-high 20 points for the Monarchs in a losing effort.

Pacifica 40, Capistrano Valley 19--Sophomore forward Jamie Waldecker scored nine points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Mariners (1-0), who put the game away with a 20-point fourth quarter. Lindsay Peloza scored eight points for Capistrano Valley (0-1).

Woodbridge 45, Norco 40--Trailing by one point after the first period, the Warrior defense put the clamps on Norco and allowed just two second-quarter points to build a 26-16 halftime lead. Senior guard Kelsi Sousa made four three-pointers and finished with a game-high 18 points for Woodbridge (1-0). Forward Lara Gray added 10 points, 11 rebounds and three steals. Lacey Zulauf paced Norco (0-1) with 12 points.

In nonleague girls’ basketball:

Kennedy 49, Garden Grove 34--After trailing the entire first half, the Fighting Irish (1-0) took control by outscoring the visitors, 27-9, after intermission. Guard Nicole Doi had 13 points and backcourt mate Lesley Mason added 11. Victoria Torrez and Kyung Cho scored 12 points each for the Argonauts (0-1).

In nonleague boys’ soccer:

Costa Mesa 2, Fountain Valley 1--Ryan Denman scored off a Bernardo Falci assist with eight minutes left to win it for visiting Costa Mesa (1-0). Falci also scored a goal in the first half after Fountain Valley (0-1) had taken a early lead on Muluwa Manda’s goal in the 22nd minute.

Kennedy 2, Western 1--Diego Figueroa scored on a penalty kick with 10 minutes left to win it for visiting Kennedy (1-0).

Juan Garcia opened the scoring with a goal in the 20th minute to give Western (0-1) a 1-0 lead at halftime, but Scott Sterry scored in the 50th minute to tie the score for the Fighting Irish.

Pacifica 3, Katella 1--Junior Derek Crocker scored two first-half goals for the host Mariners (1-0). Katella is 0-1.

Villa Park 4, Valencia 1--Jake Huber and Bryan Arguello had two goals each for host Villa Park (1-0), which led, 2-0, at halftime.

Joe Hernandez scored for Valencia (0-1).
