Ocean View

Coach: Adara Newidouski

1999-2000 record: 1-21

League record: 0-8

Ocean View might be the league’s youngest team, but it won’t lack talent. Adara Newidouski (second year) is particularly fond of freshman Leila Abufarie, a guard who played nearly every minute in the summer. The lone returner is forward Andrina Valenzuela (Sr., 5-9), who averaged eight points. Kristen Graves suffered a torn ACL in the summer but may return in time for league play. Key additions include transfers Andrea Letcher from Huntington Beach and Elyse McNeff from Calvary Chapel. Senior Lissa Shepperd didn’t play last season but should help the Seahawks on the perimeter.

Saddleback

Coach: Robert Morgan

1999-2000 record: 14-11

League record: 6-2

Alisa Carrillo, a 6-foot junior, can play all five positions for the Roadrunners and is coming off a solid sophomore season in which she averaged just under 10 points and 10 rebounds while earning first-team all-league honors. Alex Chavez, a 5-6 junior guard, begins her third season on varsity and is also a solid shooter and ballhandler. Robert Morgan is in his second season at Saddleback.

Santa Ana

Coach: Pete Rivas

1999-2000 record: 5-20

League record: 3-5

Pete Rivas (third year, 6-45) is excited about two stellar returners, Alex Ramirez and Viridiana Tovar, who know his system and should be difficult to stop on offense. The Saints will play an up-tempo defense with a continuous full-court press that Rivas hopes will provide easy baskets. A handful of skilled role players will rotate in and keep the lineup fresh. The Saints may present the most formidable challenge to Westminster for the league title. Rivas said every practice is better than the last. “This is going to be very unlike any team Santa Ana has had,” he said.

Tustin

Coach: Todd Hodgins

1999-2000 record: 5-20

League record: 3-20

Todd Hodgins takes over for Sarah Davis after one season, and is the school’s third coach in four years. Hodgins, currently on active duty in the Army, has a good nucleus coming back, including Heather Wall and Jasmine Hooper, both 5-9 senior forwards. Wall is extremely quick and possesses a good outside shot and Hooper also has a good inside-outside game. Both are solid perimeter defenders and their experience should be a positive factor. Kyko Barton, a 5-6 junior, takes over the point guard position after playing shooting guard last season. Linda Huot, a 5-5 senior guard, is one of the top newcomers. Jaime Goodman, a 5-10 junior forward, gives the Tillers a good option in the middle and she can control the offensive boards.

Westminster

Coach: Dick Katz

1999-2000 record: 23-6

League record: 8-0

Westminster is after its fourth consecutive league title and fifth in the last six years. The Lions have finished no worse than second since joining the Golden West League. Dick Katz (17th year, 205-214) won’t have the experience he had last season when he had six seniors on the roster, including four who played varsity all four years, but he won’t be hurting for talent. Guard Biava Arganda (So., 5-9) is the lone returning starter and the Lions’ tallest player. She’ll be joined by Karina Amaro, who is getting back to form after injuring her knee in January. Newcomers include Ashley Hebert, who transferred from Santa Ana Valley and will add to the team’s speed, and freshman Eva Camarena, who was the team’s leading scorer during the summer.
