Bolsa Grande

Coach: Ed Eldridge

1999-2000 record: 6-18

League record: 4-8

Ed Eldridge (fourth year, 19-55) hopes the Matadors will make up for their lack of height--no player taller than 5-8--with a pressing defense that causes turnovers. Finding a legitimate scorer is another question mark, and Bolsa Grande must improve its free-throw shooting. Guard Crystal Hoskins transferred to Pacifica, which created a big hole on offense. Guard Chau Phan (Sr., 5-2) is expected to pick up the slack.

Garden Grove

Coach: Keith Clarkson

1999-2000 record: 11-16

League record: 7-5

Keith Clarkson (sixth year, 70-69) has his youngest team. Point guard Kyung Cho (Jr., 5-4, 5.4 points, 1.6 assists) is the veteran of the group. Forwards Victoria Torrez and Rosalinda Avalos will try to control the boards, along with center Melissa Sterner. Clarkson will also have his first freshman on the roster, Kelly Nakagawa.

La Quinta

Coach: Tiara Johnson

1999-2000 record: 2-21

League record: 0-12

Tiara Johnson replaces Holly Jefferson (four years, 20-71). The Aztecs will rely on returning starters Jackie Nguyen, Amy Otsuka and Rosa Gomez. Nguyen is the team’s main scorer, Otsuka the biggest three-point threat and Gomez provides the defensive hustle. Newcomer Thao Ly also is a dead-eye three-point shooter.

Los Amigos

Coach: Ramon Aguirre

1999-2000 record: 10-15

League record: 7-5

Ramon Aguirre begins his second year with a promising outlook. After improving over the 1998-99 season with only one returning letter-winner, Aguirre will have nine players with varsity experience to plug into the lineup. Center Katie Vindhurst (Jr., 5-9), is the crown jewel after averaging 10 points and earning first-team all-league honors. Vindhurst will be supported by guards Lorena Sanchez, Chris Nguyen and Regail Carr.

Pacifica

Coach: Garth Anderson

1999-2000 record: 22-9

League record: 12-0

Pacifica is the favorite to win its seventh consecutive league title. Guard Marissa Ishii, the first player off the bench, should help fill the voids left by Diana Barreras and Dominique Valencia, who averaged 36 points between them. Garth Anderson (third year, 38-21) will also count on the only returning starter, forward Karen Pawlowski, whose greatest contributions come on defense. Forward Lindsay Skeber started some league games because of an injury to Christy Tran and averaged 12 points.

Rancho Alamitos

Coach: Jeff Holloway

1999-2000 record: 6-20

League record: 3-9

Jeff Holloway replaces Vern Broadnax (three years, 19-54). The Vaqueros return three starters, including Jennifer Alaniz (Sr., 5-8), a forward who loves to score from the baseline. Guard Pauline Graf (Sr., 5-7) is the best defender. Center Juliann Hughes (Sr., 5-10) has a strong high-post game and can drive to the basket effectively. Holloway is excited about two sophomores, guard Allison Sia and forward Nancy Pearson.

Santiago

Coach: Ron Huesser

1999-2000 record: 17-10

League record: 9-3

Ron Huesser (12th year, 149-143) returns but without leading scorer Stephanie Reupena (18.3 points), who transferred to La Quinta but didn’t go out for the basketball team. The Cavaliers hope forwards Barbara Sualua (Sr., 5-8) and Jody Robertson (Sr., 5-8), will pick up the slack. Sualua is a strong player who can score inside or outside, and Robertson brings a well-balanced game to the front court. Evelyn Gomez, a sophomore point guard, averaged 18 points for the junior varsity.
