Broadous Helps Catch Chatsworth Napping

Will Broadous caught three touchdown passes and returned a fumble five yards for another to lead Valencia High to a 47-14 victory over Chatsworth in an intersectional game Saturday at Canyon High.

The Vikings (3-1) marched 80 yards in seven plays on the opening drive, capped by Broadous’ 36-yard touchdown from Kyle Bauer.

Broadous and Bauer hooked up again on a 26-yard touchdown at the start of the second quarter.

Chatsworth (1-3) battled back in the second quarter as Jason Moss threw two touchdown passes to San Riley to pull the Chancellors to within 19-14.

With time running out in the first half, Bauer threw a long pass that was intercepted by Riley in the end zone. Thinking time had expired, Riley started celebrating and walked away from the end zone.

Receiver Will Scott of Valencia, aware the ball was alive, knocked it out of Riley’s hands, and Broadous picked it and ran five yards for the score.

“I don’t know what [Riley] was thinking, but our coaches have always told us to play until we hear the whistle,” Broadous said. “I couldn’t believe it.”

Said Coach Brian Stiman of Valencia: “I didn’t see the play. I turned my head away because I was disappointed in the interception. But it was a great thing for our player to keep on playing, because it wasn’t over for [us].”

Broadous had four receptions for 165 yards, including a 58-yard touchdown catch from Bauer to give Valencia a 40-14 lead early in the fourth quarter.

Bauer completed eight of 14 passes for 208 yards and three touchdowns and had two passes intercepted. The Vikings had 456 yards.

Freshman Craig Peters ran 14 times for 110 yards, including scoring runs of five and 40 yards, in his debut for Valencia. Peters also ran for a two-point conversion.

“Craig has a very bright future,” Stiman said. “He’s a great kid and he takes a lot of pride in what he does.”

Riley had four catches for 34 yards and Moss completed 13 of 18 passes for 94 yards and had one interception. He was sacked six times.

Derek New caught a 38-yard pass from Robert Herrick for the final score.

Valencia out-gained Chatsworth, 183-38, on the ground.
