It may seem a minuscule feat for some teams, but when Hoover quarterback Robert Kurtz connected with Jose Herrera on a 26-yard touchdown pass against Temple City last week, there was cause for celebration:

It was the first touchdown pass for Hoover since Oct. 2, 1998, a streak that extended 19 games. Last season Hoover threw 114 passes without a touchdown.

First-year Coach Rob Swartz can appreciate the significance.

“We have to take little steps I guess,” Swartz said.

Running back Nick Kaiser of Nordhoff is on a roll.

Kaiser has rushed for 413 yards and five touchdowns in the last two games, victories over Bishop Diego and Harvard-Westlake.

“He’s doing a heck of a job,” Coach Cliff Farrar said.

Kaiser has been sharing carries with fellow wingbacks Jordan Hawkins and Ian Campbell but is quickly emerging as the star.

At 6 feet, 202 pounds, Kaiser is what Farrar calls, “a load.”

“When there’s a hole, he’s running over people,” Farrar said.

Kaiser, who is averaging 6.9 yards a carry, has rushed for 543 yards and five touchdowns.
