Ross Leads Sonora Past Sunny Hills

Senior quarterback Nick Ross completed nine of 17 passes for 122 yards and one touchdown, kicked a 30-yard field goal and an extra point to lead Sonora to a 16-6 Freeway League victory over Sunny Hills Friday at La Habra High.

The Raiders’ first touchdown came midway through the first quarter after recovering a kickoff-return fumble at the Lancer 34-yard line. On a second-and-goal play, Ross took the football in from the one-yard line.

Ross kicked his field goal with 4 minutes 36 seconds remaining in the second quarter, giving Sonora (5-1, 1-0) a 10-0 halftime lead.

Sunny Hills scored on its second possession of the third quarter. Taking the ball at their own 32-yard line, the Lancers (0-6, 0-1) put together a 13-play drive culminated by Kaleo Igarta’s seven-yard run. It was the only time Sunny Hills crossed the 50-yard line into Sonora territory.

“Our defense has played well all year, but especially in this game,” Sonora Coach Mark Takkinen said. “There was a lot more intensity.”

Sonora scored its final touchdown with no time remaining in the game when Terrence Hobley intercepted Nick Rodriguez’s desperation pass and ran it back into the end zone.

Sonora’s leading rusher, David Mayfield, who has 722 yards in 114 carries this season, did not play due to an ankle injury suffered in last week’s 13-10 loss to Whittier.

Sophomore running back Frank Salazar, brought up from the junior varsity, played the first half and rushed eight times for 19 yards. Igarta led Sunny Hills in rushing with 19 carries for 55 yards.
