Single-Minded Canyon Girls Outpoint Hart on Games, 94-73

Strong singles play lifted Canyon High over upset-minded Hart on Tuesday in a girls’ Foothill League tennis match.

Jennifer Choi and Gemma Pucci, playing at No. 2 doubles for Hart, defeated the No. 1 team of Alanna Gadd and Dorian Miller to tie the score, 9-9, but Canyon won on games, 94-73.

The Cowboys (12-2, 6-1 in league play), who defeated the Indians, 12-6, in the first round of Foothill League play, won six of nine singles matches.

In the six victories, Canyon’s Missy Suarez, Lauren Tripp and Claire Harper won by a combined 36-6.

Hart is 4-7, 3-4.

In other girls’ tennis matches:

Granada Hills 7, Taft 0--The Highlanders (9-0, 6-0) have not lost a set this season and outscored the Toreadors, 56-1, in games in a West Valley League match at Taft.

Sisters Jasmin and Christine Dao, Canna Furuta and Yuka Otaka did not lose a game in singles play for the Highlanders, who have won 26 consecutive matches and are defending City Section champions.

Chatsworth 4, Cleveland 3--Bonnie Dong notched a critical singles victory, 8-5, over Janet Wu, and the Chancellors won a West Valley League match at Chatsworth.

Chatsworth swept in doubles, including an 8-7 (3) victory by Jessica Duboff and Samar Rouhani over Hanna Kim and Christine Chung.

San Fernando 5, Reseda 2--The Tigers swept doubles play in a Valley Mission League match at Reseda (4-5, 3-3).

Ana Alvarado and Annette Mendoza of San Fernando (9-0, 6-0) remained unbeaten for the season at No. 2 doubles with an 8-6 victory, and the No. 1 team of Valeria Mendoza and Karina Rojas improved its record to 8-1, 6-0 in league, with an 8-1 victory.

The Tigers’ No. 4 singles player, Cristina Sandoval, also is unbeaten this season.

Van Nuys 5, Sylmar 2--Diana Friedland won, 8-0, at No. 1 singles and Fontip Seeboonruang won, 8-2, at No. 2 for the Wolves (5-4, 4-2) in a Valley Mission League match at Van Nuys. Both remained undefeated in league play.

GIRLS’ GOLF

Foothill League Match No. 3--Sara Jones and Jennifer Parkes each shot four-over-par 37 to lead Hart to a runaway victory at Vista Valencia Golf Course.

Erica Leary shot a 40 to round out the Indians’ 114 total and give them a 24-1 record, 15-0 in league play.

Burroughs was second with 136, followed by Burbank with 150.

Moah Chang of Burbank, defending league champion, shot a 37 to tie Jones and Leary for medalist honors.

Harvard-Westlake 116, Notre Dame 136--Ina Kim and Emma Stachowitz both shot one-over-par 37 for the Wolverines (10-1, 10-1), who dealt Notre Dame its first loss of the season in a Mission League match at Balboa Golf Course.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Valencia def. Saugus--7-15, 10-15, 15-7, 15-9, 15-12--The Vikings rallied from an 11-3 deficit in the fifth game to win a Foothill League match at Valencia.

Ashley Dickinson served seven consecutive points--including five aces of her nine aces--to get the Vikings (6-4, 3-2) even, 11-11.

Hart def. Canyon, 15-10, 15-8, 15-12--Nicole Stuka had 10 kills with seven digs and the Indians (7-3, 5-0) won a Foothill League match at Hart.

Chaminade def. Alemany, 11-15, 15-8, 15-8, 12-15, 15-2--Ashley Trine made 13 kills and Jenny Long had nine kills and four blocks as the Eagles (5-5, 2-3) rallied to win a Mission League match at Chaminade.
