Scott Leaving Alemany, Will Go to St. Paul

Tailback De’Andre Scott has decided to withdraw from Alemany High and transfer to St. Paul, Coach Craig Schuler said Wednesday.

Scott, the Times’ Valley co-offensive player of the year last season, was suspended for one game earlier this season after missing two practices. Last spring, he briefly transferred to Rialto Eisenhower before returning to Alemany.

Coach Marijon Ancich of St. Paul confirmed Wednesday that Scott’s mother was on campus trying to check him into school. Scott would have to change residences to be eligible immediately.

If Scott obtains his eligibility at the Santa Fe Springs school, it could create an interesting Del Rey League game on Nov. 3 when St. Paul is scheduled to play Alemany.

Scott entered this season as one of the top returning running backs in California, but he has struggled, gaining 503 yards and scoring four touchdowns after rushing for 1,747 yards and scoring 33 touchdowns in 1999.

“I feel a little bit betrayed because I bent over backward to help him and let him get away with things that others might not have,” Schuler said.

Alemany (2-4) won the game that Scott did not play and will move junior Albert Griffin to tailback.

“It doesn’t shake us as much as people might perceive,” Schuler said.

Asked if he’d play Scott even though St. Paul (3-3) is in the seventh week of the season, Ancich said, “We have 374 boys on this campus. If Deion Sanders shows up, we’d need him.”

Scott has been frustrated by his lack of success this season. He attended school Monday but didn’t go to practice. On Tuesday, Schuler said Scott’s mother informed him of the decision to leave Alemany.
