Notre Dame Ends Road Losing Streak, 42-28

Freshman quarterback Matt LoVecchio looked steady and got plenty of help from his teammates as Notre Dame won for the first time on an opponent’s field in two years.

LoVecchio, making his third start, threw two touchdown passes to Tony Fisher and the 20th-ranked Irish scored 35 consecutive points for a 42-28 victory over West Virginia on Saturday.

Notre Dame (5-2), whose players began talking during the week about a possible berth in the Bowl Championship Series, broke a seven-game losing streak on an opponent’s field, a school record.

West Virginia (4-3) gave up more than 40 points to a Top 25 opponent for the third consecutive time. The Mountaineers have lost six in a row to ranked teams dating to 1998.

The Irish did not fumble and are the only Division I-A team not to lose a fumble this season. Mountaineer Coach Don Nehlen failed for the second consecutive game to get his 200th career win.
