Sea Kings Leave Servite in Their Wake

Top-ranked Corona del Mar jumped out to a big halftime lead and cruised to an 8-3 nonleague victory over 10th-ranked Servite Monday at Servite in a rematch of last year’s Southern Section Division II boys’ water polo final.

Servite trailed, 5-0, at halftime before scoring twice in the third quarter, but Corona del Mar (14-2) was never threatened.

The Sea Kings got three goals from Garrett Bowlus and two each from Michael March and Artie Dorr. Sherwin Kim and Beau Stockstill, who split time in goal for Corona del Mar, had five saves each. Vincent Bevins, Shawn McCurdy and Mike Rustemeyer scored for Servite, which lost to Corona del Mar, 8-6, in last year’s Division II final.

In other nonleague water polo:

Santa Ana Valley 10, Marina 9 (sudden death)--Juan Mendez scored midway through sudden-death overtime to give host Santa Ana Valley the victory. Abner Castorena had three goals to lead the Falcons (16-6). Marina’s Dave Wagner had four goals.

Tustin 10, Long Beach Poly 7 (OT)--Anthony Spezza scored seven goals and Jason Zitney made 12 saves for host Tustin (11-7). The Tillers’ A.J. Villalobos scored with 1:04 remaining in regulation to send the game to overtime.

In Pacific Coast League girls’ golf:

No. 1 University 118, Estancia 188--Sunny Lee finished with a 37 to medal for University (15-0, 9-0).

In the Sea View League:

No. 9 Irvine 122, Woodbridge 134--Stella Lee finished with three birdies and shot a three-under 33 to medal and lead Irvine (8-4, 3-3) at Oak Creek. In the Serra League:

No. 3 Santa Margarita 128, Mater Dei 136--Brenda Progar shot a four-over 40 to medal for Santa Margarita at Tijeras Creek.

No. 5 Rosary 119, Torrance Bishop Montgomery 133--Eileen Jonas had two birdies to medal for Rosary (11-2, 5-2) with a two-over 35 at Fullerton Golf Club.

In the Sunset League:

No. 6 Los Alamitos 101, Huntington Beach 127--Senior Michelle Eastlack made three birdies and shot par 31 at David L. Baker as the Griffins (15-1, 9-0) clinched their first league title.

In nonleague girls’ golf:

Palos Verdes Peninsula 279, Ocean View 287--Ocean View’s Nicole Peralta had four birdies in the match played at Palos Verdes and Meadowlark.
