SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

After a three-hour standoff, police arrested a 29-year-old Buena Park man Tuesday on suspicion of violating his parole, authorities said.

Kevin Eugene Bussey was arrested after members of a SWAT team entered Bussey’s father’s house in the 6000 block of Homewood Avenue looking for the suspect and found him hiding on a shelf in a closet, Buena Park Police Lt. Robert Gonzales said.

Bussey had reportedly been sentenced in 1995 for resisting arrest and assaulting an officer, resulting in bodily harm, Gonzales said. “That’s the original charge that sent him to prison, the charge that set this all in motion.”

The standoff began around noon when police attempted to serve a warrant for his arrest at the Bussey residence. The warrant had been issued when he allegedly failed to visit his parole officer, violating the conditions of his parole, authorities said.

Although no one answered the officer’s initial knock on the door, officers thought they heard someone moving about inside the one-story back house and believed Bussey was inside.

Believing Bussey was armed and dangerous, police called for a SWAT team backup, evacuated residents who live in the one-block section of Homewood Avenue between Artesia Boulevard and Commonwealth Avenue and cordoned off the area.

Police attempted to communicate with Bussey by telephoning the house. They also used a department land line that they tossed into the window. Soon after, Bussey’s father, William, fled the residence and officers stormed in the open door.

A handful of neighbors stood behind the yellow police tape and watched as a team of officers brought out a handcuffed, shirtless and bald Bussey and placed him in the back seat of a squad car.

Roseanne Davis, who has lived in the neighborhood for the last 10 years, said there is very little excitement in the area.

“It’s not the nicest neighborhood in the world, but it’s generally pretty quiet,” she said.

Gilbert Lomeli, a neighbor who lives only a few doors down from the Busseys, said that Bussey’s father is friendly and his mother died four weeks ago of cancer. The Busseys had moved to their Homewood Avenue home about seven years ago.
