Laguna Beach Outlasts University in Tennis

Laguna Beach needed a second tiebreaker to defeat University in a Pacific Coast League girls’ tennis match Tuesday at Laguna Beach.

After the teams tied on sets, 9-9, and games, 79-79, an 18-game tiebreaker was used, but that ended in a 9-9 tie.

A second tiebreaker was used and the Artists, ranked ninth in the county, prevailed, 13-5, to end the four-hour match.

“I’ve played four years of high school tennis and coached for six and never had this happen, Laguna Beach Coach Michelle Foster said. “I’ve never seen the girls so fired up.”

The Artists’ No. 1 doubles team of Meghan MacGillivray and Caroline Tucker swept, 6-2, 6-0, 7-6, in regulation, then won six games in the tiebreaker to lead the Artists (10-6, 8-2).

In another Pacific Coast League match:

No. 1 Corona Del Mar 18, Estancia 0--Brittany Reitz swept, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, for visiting Corona del Mar (15-2, 8-0). She has won 72 of 73 games since becoming eligible last week.

In the Century League:

No. 6 Canyon 12, El Modena 6--Tracy Lin and Elizabeth Ferris both swept, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, in singles for visiting Canyon (17-3, 8-0).

In the Sea View League:

No. 4 Woodbridge 13, No. 8 Newport Harbor 5--Woodbridge (17-5, 6-0), which clinched a tie for the league title, got sweeps from Susanna Lingman and Eliabeth Exon in singles and Haleh Fazeli and Jennifer Roth in doubles.

In the Serra League:

No. 5 Mater Dei 17, Torrance Bishop Montgomery 1--Emily Boyd and Julie Litrich won in doubles, 6-1, 6-2, 6-3, for the Monarchs (10-4, 6-0).

In the South Coast League:

No. 2 Dana Hills 14, Trabuco Hills 4--Kristin Bronowicki, Amy Vyhnis and Gillian Ayers all swept in singles for Dana Hills (14-3, 7-0).

In the Sunset League:

No. 10 Esperanza 11, Huntington Beach 7--Kelly Six swept in singles, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, for Esperanza.

No. 7 Los Alamitos 14, Fountain Valley 4--Joann Han and Beth Boylan won, 6-3, 6-0, 6-4, in doubles for host Los Alamitos (12-1, 7-1).

In Sunset League field hockey:

Edison 2, Huntington Beach 1--Becca Antongiorgi and Katie Cornell scored second half goals to lead host Edison (9-2-2).

In Century League girls’ golf:

No. 2 Villa Park 125, Santa Ana Valley 189--Shelly Raworth shot two-over 38 to medal at Green River for Villa Park (16-1, 9-0).

In the Empire League:

El Dorado 107, Century 123--Co-medalists Stacy Ellingson and Stella Min each shot six-over 35 at Birch Hills as El Dorado (11-3, 7-0) clinched the Empire League title for the third year in a row.

In the Pacific Coast League:

No. 1 University 119, No. 7 Corona del Mar 130--Angela Won shot two-over 37 at Newport Beach Country Club for visiting University (16-0, 10-0).

In the Sea View League:

No. 3 Aliso Niguel 131, No. 10 Woodbridge 145--Aliso Niguel’s LeislHasbrouck birdied the third hole and shot three-over 39 at Monarch Beach.

In the South Coast League:

No. 8 Dana Hills 129, Capistrano Valley 170--Carling Cho shot one-over 37 for Dana Hills (11-4, 8-1) at Monarch Beach.

In the Sunset League:

No. 6 Los Alamitos 128, No. 9 Esperanza 130--Esperanza’s Kayley Parrett shot two-over 37 at Cypress. Jamie Oliver shot 38 for Los Alamitos (16-1, 10-0).

In Century League boys’ water polo:

No. 3 Villa Park 16, Santa Ana Valley 4--Charlie Fisher scored eight goals and T.J. Matijevich had six for visiting Villa Park (19-3, 4-0).

In the Serra League:

No. 8 Santa Margarita 21, Mater Dei 8--Keith Files and Nick Nolan scored five goals each and Garrett Marquis added four as Santa Margarita (18-7, 3-0) clinched the league title.
