Ausmus, Lancers Surge in Second Half

Freshman running back John Ausmus carried the ball eight times for 163 yards and scored two touchdowns, one on a kickoff return, helping Orange Lutheran to a 26-7 Olympic League victory over Whittier Christian Friday at Whittier College.

Ausmus rushed for 150 yards in the second half and sparked the Lancers (6-2, 3-0 in league), who led only 7-0 at the half.

“We did not play well, especially in the first half,” Lancer Coach Jim Kunau said. “Emotionally, we were pretty flat.”

Orange Lutheran’s first touchdown came with 1:12 remaining in the first quarter after Whittier Christian punter Sam Palescu mishandled a snap at his own goal line and punted only to the 15-yard line. Four plays later, Justin Taylor scored from the one.

Trailing, 13-0, Whittier Christian (3-5, 1-2) pulled within six points late in the third quarter on a 38-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Abraham Santos to Anthony Ruiz.

On the ensuing kickoff, Ausmus took the ball at the 20 and went 80 yards up the middle for a touchdown. Midway in the fourth quarter, Ausmus scored on a six-yard run.

Robby Hobbs, who recently returned from an injury, started at quarterback for Orange Lutheran but completed only two passes in six attempts for 34 yards. Taylor entered in the first quarter and completed seven of 10 attempts for 83 yards.

The leading rusher for Whittier Christian was Gavin Moy, who had 42 yards in nine carries.

Santos completed five passes in 12 attempts for 56 yards.
