Garden Grove Pounds Ocean View

Share

Garden Grove scored 20 consecutive points in the first five minutes and never looked back in a 42-19 victory over Ocean View in a nonleague game Saturday at Garden Grove High.

The Argonauts came out of the gates running as Thomas Parrilla took the opening kickoff, found a seam on the right side and returned it 91 yards for a touchdown.

After Ocean View went three-and-out on its first possession, Garden Grove fullback Fui Taumofoelau scored on a two-yard run to cap a six-play, 42-yard drive. It was the first of three touchdown runs for Taumofoelau.

On the next possession, Ocean View, which fumbled four times in the first half, gave the ball back to Garden Grove at the Seahawk 25. The Argonauts capitalized quickly as Ruben Rangel broke two tackles and scored on a 25-yard run to make it 20-0.

“I don’t know if we expected to score that quickly, but we’ve been improving every week,” Garden Grove Coach Kris Van Hook said. “We felt like we needed to score and play from ahead because these guys throw the ball all over the place.”

Garden Grove (4-3-1, 3-1) increased its lead to 28-0 early in the second quarter when quarterback Keo Sutherland passed 32 yards to Felipe Garcia for a touchdown. Ocean View was still looking for its first first down of the game.

Midway through the second quarter, the Seahawks got a first down to sustain a 48-yard scoring drive that was capped by Pat Campbell’s 12-yard touchdown pass to Jason Rhoads to make it 28-7.

The Argonaut defense dominated in the first half, holding Ocean View (4-4, 0-2) to minus-14 yards rushing. Garden Grove also put constant pressure on Campbell, who completed only five of 16 passes in the half.

Ocean View pulled to within 28-13 when Campbell, who passed for 243 yards and three touchdowns, hooked up with James Daniels on a 58-yard touchdown pass, but the Seahawks drew no closer.
