AROUND THE LEAGUES

Outfielder Joe Borchard of Camarillo High and Stanford was promoted to double-A Birmingham this week by the Chicago White Sox.

Borchard, the 12th overall pick in the June draft, signed five weeks ago for a record $5.3 million and began in the rookie-level Arizona League before a call-up to Class-A Winston-Salem two weeks ago.

Jon Garland of Kennedy High also played Wednesday for Birmingham, striking out 10 in six shutout innings of a rehabilitation start. It was his first appearance since being hit with a line drive on his pitching elbow Aug. 18 while playing for the White Sox.
