Harvard-Westlake in Semifinals

Jim Singleton and James Bloomingdale each scored three goals and Harvard-Westlake High cruised past Chadwick, 13-3, Friday in a quarterfinal game of the Jim Toring Memorial Invitational at Harvard-Westlake.

Although Harvard-Westlake has dominated in its first two tournament games, Coach Rich Corso said the pressure is on the Wolverines to win the title.

“There’s a lot at stake for us because it’s the Jim Toring tournament and we lost it last year,” Corso said.

“It’s our tournament [in memory of] the best player we’ve ever had in the history of the school and for one of the greatest young players of all time.”

Jim Toring, a former Harvard-Westlake and UCLA All-American and national team member, died in April 1998, one week after being hit by a bus on a Paris street. He was 23.

The Wolverines (4-0), who last year lost in the tournament final to Los Alamitos, 7-5, will play Dos Pueblos in a semifinal at Belmont Plaza Pool at 10:30 a.m. today. The championship game is scheduled for 3:30.

Dos Pueblos 9, Crespi 4--The Chargers snapped the Celts’ winning streak at six games in a quarterfinal game of the Jim Toring tournament.

Crescenta Valley 15, Notre Dame 10--Reserve Ben Tickner scored all five of his goals in the second and third quarters for the Falcons in consolation game of the Jim Toring tournament.

Jeff Little and David Mulcahey combined on seven goals for Crescenta Valley (3-1), which led, 14-5, after three quarters.

Brandon Everman scored six goals for Notre Dame (1-5-1).

Nordhoff 13, Cate 3--Spencer Ford scored five goals and Shaun Jappe added two for the Rangers (2-4) in a nonleague game at Cate.

Calabasas 24, Rio Mesa 19--Sean Goodman scored nine goals and Gene Broussard added seven for the Coyotes (4-2) in a nonleague overtime victory at Calabasas.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Oak Park 10, Simi Valley 8--No. 2 singles player Natalie Jacobs surrendered one game in sweeping three sets, and Erica Levy and Devin Hindin won two of three sets at No. 1 doubles for the Eagles (3-1) in a victory at Oak Park.
