De La Salle’s Winning Ways Go Way, Way, Way Back

Share

U2’s album “Achtung Baby” topped the rock charts the last time Concord De La Salle, which has a national-record 102-game winning streak, lost a football game. On Dec. 4, 1991, the Spartans were defeated by Pittsburg, 35-27, in the championship game of the North Coast Section.

What else was going on back then? Well, there was still plenty of buzz over Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas’ sexual harassment hearings. In the world of sports, Magic Johnson had recently announced that he was HIV-positive and leaving the Lakers, while the Chicago Bulls were on their way to a second consecutive NBA title.

In Orange County prep sports, Mater Dei was 10 days away from its first of five Southern Section Division I titles under Coach Bruce Rollinson. The Monarchs would defeat Rialto Eisenhower, 35-14, before 33,204 at Edison Field, then known as Anaheim Stadium.
