PREP FOOTBALL ROUNDUP

Canyon 24, Estancia 7--Coach Brent McKee’s plan for the Canyon offense fell through, but his backup plan worked like a charm, in a victory over previously unbeaten Estancia at Newport Harbor High.

McKee said he was hoping to run the option offense with sophomore quarterback Brad Lusk. However, at halftime, with Lusk having carried the ball five times for a net loss of four yards, McKee had to look for another approach.

He pulled a counter play out of the playbook and looked to senior wing Darryl Parker. The Comanches executed perfectly twice in the second half, with Parker scoring on runs of 72 and 53 yards.

Estancia (2-1) looked impressive in scoring on the game’s opening drive, going 74 yards in nine plays. Andy Romo scored on a 22-yard run, but that was it for the Eagles.

Canyon (2-1) tied the score later in the quarter on an eight-play, 54-yard drive, capped by Travis Tolly’s five-yard score. Ryan Keys gave the Comanches the lead for good with one second left in the half on a 30-yard field goal.
