SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Palisades High quarterback David Koral established a national record by passing for 764 yards in the Dolphins’ 48-30 nonleague victory over Van Nuys Grant Friday at Grant.

According the Student Sports national football record book, Koral, a senior, broke the record of 672 yards set last season by Rhett Lashlee of Shiloh Christian (Springdale, Ark.) in a game against Junction City.

Koral completed 39 of 59 attempts and passed for seven touchdowns as Palisades improved to 2-1. Ten of Koral’s completions came on shovel passes that totaled 49 yards. The Dolphins rushed the ball only two times.

Koral, who had one pass intercepted, connected with receivers on touchdown pass plays of 80, 15, 42, 52, 94, 90 and 34 yards.

“We were just throwing deep,” Koral said. “Their safeties were playing up, so I could throw deep all day.”

Greig Carlson had nine catches for 253 yards and three touchdowns. Charles Ealy had 16 receptions for 243 yards and two touchdowns, and Eric Beegun had five receptions for 161 yards and two touchdowns for Palisades, which led 28-3 at halftime and 40-23 after three quarters.

“We had a lot of man-on-man coverages that we were able to take advantage of,” Palisades Coach Ron Price said. “We have a lot of talented, fast kids at wide receiver that can make plays.”

Koral set a state record last season with 4,895 passing yards. He has thrown for 1,425 yards in three games this season.

Koral’s heroics overshadowed an admirable performance by Grant’s Perry Clayton, who rushed for 313 yards in 30 carries and scored on runs of 42 and 47 yards. Clayton also caught a 36-yard touchdown pass from Alfonso Estrada.
