Paraclete’s Brown Runs Over Turmoil-Plagued Monroe, 42-12

Mum was the word on the sidelines Friday night at Monroe High, but Paraclete’s action on the field proved loud enough.

Curtis Brown ran 19 times for 285 yards and four touchdowns, including three in the first half, and Paraclete cruised to a 42-12 victory in an intersectional game.

Brown’s performance was overshadowed by events off the field. Monroe Coach Chris Richards sat out the game while serving a two-game suspension, starting running back Steve Trammel missed his second consecutive game with a torn knee ligament and backup running back Jeffery Young and two other Vikings were absent for undisclosed reasons.

Keary Johns, Richards’ brother, is coaching the Vikings during Richards’ suspension.

Distracted and depleted, Monroe (1-3) gave up 232 yards in the first half. Brown scored on runs of four, 12 and 14 yards to give Paraclete (3-1) a 22-6 halftime lead.

Monroe’s Steve Beltran completed 11 of 31 passes for 128 yards and two touchdowns, including a seven-yard pass to Victor Hines to cut the deficit to 22-12. But Beltran had three passes intercepted, including two by Joe Martin.

The Spirits, who have outscored their opponents, 84-18, in their last two games, out-gained Monroe, 379 yards to 76, on the ground.

Michael Washington had seven tackles and scored on a 59-yard run with 11:50 to play, Alex Williams scored from one yard and Brown scored on a 65-yard run to cap the scoring.

Antonio Lleneras had six catches for 90 yards, including a 38-yard touchdown pass from Beltran for Monroe’s first score.

Washington finished with 126 yards, including 66 yards in four carries, and Craig Herrera completed six of 12 passes for 98 yards.
