A long-standing women’s track and field record at Northridge could fall Sunday when junior Frances Santin runs in the 400-meter low hurdles in the Mt. San Antonio College Relays in Walnut.

Santin ranks second on the all-time Northridge list with a 56.67 clocking, but the Taft High graduate appears capable of challenging the school record of 56.40 set by Sandra Myers in 1980.

Santin won the 400 hurdles in 57.25 in a meet against Nebraska and host UCLA on Saturday to exceed the automatic qualifying standard of 57.50 for the NCAA championships in June. But Northridge assistant Jeff McAuley said she was headed for a low 56-second clocking before she hit the ninth of 10 hurdles with her trail leg.

“She almost came to a dead stop and she still ran [57.25],” McAuley said. “If she doesn’t hit that hurdle, she runs close to 56-flat.”
