Pacifica’s Win Streak Ended by Orangewood

Orangewood Academy ended Pacifica’s 43-match Garden Grove League winning streak in boys’ golf, defeating the Mariners, 208-211, Thursday at Mile Square.

Sophomore Tim Stuart chipped in for birdie on the ninth hole, giving the Spartans (7-1, 7-1) the victory. Teammate Zach Jones was medalist with a one-over 37, and Warren Tamanaha shot 39 for Orangewood, which had lost to Pacifica by one stroke two weeks earlier.

Ian Stirling shot 40 for Pacifica (13-1, 7-1).

In another Garden Grove League match:

La Quinta 247, Los Amigos 276--Shaun Harmatiuk shot 47 and three other golfers finished with 51s for the host Aztecs (4-7, 3-5) at Mile Square.

In the Century League:

El Modena 207, Canyon 221--Ed McGlasson and Michael Stack each shot three-over 39 for the Vanguards (12-4, 5-3) at Tustin Ranch. Freshman Chad Blakney shot 39 for Canyon (2-6 in league).

In Century League boys’ tennis:

No. 9 Canyon 13, El Modena 5--Travis Kula and Brian Batsel improved to 18-0 at No. 1 doubles for the host Comanches (13-3, 6-0). El Modena is 11-3, 3-3.

In the Freeway League:

No. 10 Sunny Hills 10, No. 5 Troy 8--Sunny Hills (11-4, 6-1) won eight of nine singles sets and held off visiting Troy.

Gregory Sturman and Daniel Chang swept their singles sets for the Lancers, who avenged a 12-6 defeat earlier this season to the Warriors.

Troy is 14-3, 6-1.

In Century League boys’ track and field:

Villa Park 82, Orange 38--Villa Park’s Danny Steagall won the long jump with a leap of 22-11 1/2, the second-best mark in the county this season.

Matt Zimmerman won the 200 and 400 for the Spartans (5-1, 3-1).

In the Freeway League:

Troy 64, Sonora 63--Geoff Smith won the 100 (10.9) and 200 (24.3) and Paul Evenson won the shotput (51-5) and discus (137 1/2) for Troy (10-0, 4-0).

In the Freeway League:

Buena Park 68, Sunny Hills 59--Despite victories by Sunny Hills’ Kristiam Fernandez in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meters, Buena Park held on to win the meet.

In the Garden Grove League:

Pacifica 75, Los Amigos 41--Steve Naughton won the 880 2:09.8), mile (5:02.7) and two mile (11:22.7) for the host Mariners. Shun Miyoshi was first in the high jump (5-4), long jump (19-3) and triple jump (19-3) for Los Amigos (2-3).

In Freeway League girls’ track and field:

Sunny Hills 112, Buena Park 14--Mayasel Pacheco won the long jump at 13-6 1/2 and the discus at 86-6 for Sunny Hills (3-1).

In Serra League boys’ volleyball:

No. 8 Mater Dei 3, Bellflower St. John Bosco 0--Jon Daze recorded 16 kills as Mater Dei (6-3, 2-1) swept St. John Bosco (9-2, 1-2), 15-7, 15-11, 15-13.
