Tiznow’s Training Stopped

Tiznow, who came out of a workout last Friday at Santa Anita with a back injury, will be taken out of training for two months, trainer Jay Robbins said Tuesday.

Tiznow, who was voted horse of the year for 2000 and won the Santa Anita Handicap in March, won’t resume active training until the end of June.

The setback will cost Robbins two objectives, the $750,000 Pimlico Special on May 12 and the $750,000 Hollywood Gold Cup on July 1. The next race on Tiznow’s schedule might be the $1-million Pacific Classic at Del Mar on Aug. 19.

The Pimlico Special apparently has fallen apart. Captain Steve, winner of the Dubai World Cup last month, hasn’t bounced back from that race as well as trainer Bob Baffert anticipated and isn’t expected to run in Baltimore. Captain Steve is scheduled for a workout today at Churchill Downs, where Baffert is preparing his standout 3-year-olds, Point Given and Congaree, for the Kentucky Derby on May 5.

Both colts worked Tuesday, Point Given going five furlongs in :59 3/5 and Congaree turning in a :47 4/5 clocking for half a mile. The track was rated good after an overnight rain. Point Given’s time was second among 33 horses at his distance, and similarly only one horse among 30 worked faster than Congaree at four furlongs.

“I thought the track was dead, so those were pretty good moves,” Baffert said. “I asked Point Given to do more because it’s been longer since he’s raced. They both went over the track well and they weren’t tired afterward, so that’s a good sign. They’re both ready. They could run now if the Derby was this weekend.”
