List of Walking Wounded Is Growing by the Minute

Dave Hansen was picking at his guitar in the Dodger clubhouse Thursday afternoon, having returned from his rehabilitation assignment in Vero Beach, Fla., earlier in the day. Appropriately enough, he was playing “Dust in the Wind,” what with the Dodgers being blown away by their recent rash of injuries.

Within a 24-hour period, the Dodgers lost Mark Grudzielanek (sprained right thumb), Gary Sheffield (swollen left index finger) and Chris Donnels (stiff neck). Reliever Mike Fetters was also battling bronchitis and a sinus infection.

Hansen, who broke his left middle finger diving back to first base during the Dodgers’ first spring training game on March 2, should be activated today from the disabled list.

Hansen, 32, began his intensive rehab assignment on Sunday and played with the extended spring training club in the mornings and the Class-A Dodgers in the evenings. Wednesday, he had a combined 14 at-bats.

“It was like that every day I was there,” Hansen said. “I needed to go down there and get in shape as far as hand-eye coordination and stamina for my hand.”

Dodger bench coach Jim Riggleman joined the walking wounded Thursday when third-base coach Glenn Hoffman accidentally hit him in the face with his fungo bat while hitting ground balls during batting practice. A bloodied Riggleman, walking behind Hoffman and hit on his follow-through swing, was helped off the field by Hoffman. Riggleman was taken to Centinela Hospital and had surgery for a broken nose.
