Loreto’s Single in 14th Lifts Rosary Over Eagles

Evie Loreto’s two-out infield single in the 14th inning scored Christa Arriaga to give host Rosary, the sixth-ranked team in the county, a 4-3 victory over No. 8 Santa Margarita in a Serra League softball game Friday.

Kimmie Hopkin’s second double of the game scored the tying run for Santa Margarita (17-6, 2-1) in the top of the seventh. Darcy McClelland gave up four hits in 7 2/3 innings of relief to earn the victory. Rosary is 17-7, 2-0.

In another Serra League game:

Mater Dei 15, Lakewood St. Joseph 2--Sheila McCorkle hit two home runs and Jessica Young homered for the Monarchs (13-8, 1-1).

In the Academy League:

Oxford Academy 10, Fairmont 0 (5, mercy)--Brittany Hebert had three hits including a home run for Oxford Academy (10-3, 4-2).

In the Express League:

Liberty Christian 18, Rolling Hills 0 (5, mercy)--Danielle Mershon struck out eight and doubled and tripled to lead Liberty Christian (13-4, 5-0). Tiffany Fernandez went four for four with five RBIs and two stolen bases.

In the Golden West League:

Tustin 2, Ocean View 0--Katie Speicher drove in both runs for Tustin (15-4-1, 9-0) with a third-inning single. Diana LaRiva, who began this week as the top strikeout pitcher in the county, fanned 16 in a five-hitter.

In the South Coast League:

No. 9 El Toro 2, Trabuco Hills 0--Robyn Ford-Feitz struck out six and Megan Lally hit a run-scoring single in the sixth for El Toro (16-9, 3-3).

Capistrano Valley 2, San Clemente 1--Kristin Timbers scored the tying run for Capistrano Valley (16-7-1) with two outs in the seventh inning on an error. Brooke Weekley then stole third and scored the game-winning run on a throwing error.

Dana Hills 5, Mission Viejo 1--Allison Cohen pitched a five-hitter and Brittany Anzlovar had two hits, drove in a run and scored twice for visiting Dana Hills (13-8, 3-1).

In nonleague boys’ swimming:

No. 6 Villa Park 107, Buena Park 60--T.J. Matijevich won the 200 individual medley (2:12.08) and 100 butterfly (59.05) for the Spartans (10-3), who won all three relays.

Canyon 121, Cypress 49--Jeff Price won the 50 freestyle (23.9) and the 100 breaststroke (107.9) for Canyon (9-1). Cypress is 6-4.

In nonleague girls’ swimming:

Eagles win--Led by Shannon Packard, fourth-ranked Santa Margarita won all but three events to win a tri-meet with 446 points. No. 5 Foothill took second (400) and Mission Viejo was third (301).

Packard, the meet’s only double winner, took the 200 individual medley (2:13.86) and the 100 backstroke (1:01.11). Erika Figge won the 100 breaststroke in 1:10.0.

No. 8 Canyon 115, Cypress 55--Sheeva Khalafbeigi won the 50 freestyle (26.15) and 100 breaststroke (1:14.11) for Canyon (9-1, 4-1).

In the Santa Barbara volleyball tournament:

Marina 3, Simi Valley Royal 0--Steffin Rangel had 20 kills and nine blocks and Drew Wilson had 15 kills for the Vikings (15-2), who won, 15-11, 15-9, 15-12. Marina advanced to play Capistrano Valley in the semifinals.

Sacramento Bear River 3, Newport Harbor 1--Blake Tippett had 32 kills for the Sailors (8-6), who lost, 15-12, 14-16, 18-16, 15-7. Newport Harbor, which defeated Santa Barbara in the first round, 15-5, 15-3, 15-13, will play Santa Margarita in a fifth-place semifinal.
