A pregnant bicyclist who was struck by a pickup truck in Canoga Park later delivered her baby at the hospital, where heroin was found in her system, police said Sunday.

The unidentified woman was riding south on Canoga Avenue about 8:25 p.m. Saturday when a motorist in a Ford Ranger hit her while turning from a northbound lane near Vanowen Street. The bicycle lacked proper reflectors or a light, police said.

The bicyclist was taken to Northridge Hospital Medical Center, where labor was induced. She delivered a boy Saturday night.

The infant was being observed in intensive care Sunday afternoon, and his mother, who had been eight months pregnant, was listed in stable condition.

Because heroin was found in the woman’s and baby’s systems, the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services will not release the child to the mother pending its own investigation, said Sgt. Alex Medel of the Los Angeles Police Department.

No one was cited in the collision, and Medel said the mother will not be arrested.
