Fire Burns Small Part of Laguna Wilderness Park
Four to five acres were blackened by a brush fire Tuesday in Laguna Coast Wilderness Park, about five miles from where a 1993 fire destroyed 441 homes.
The fire, reported at 3:18 p.m., moved slowly uphill, coming within about a half a mile of the San Joaquin Hills toll road before being brought under control about two hours later, authorities said.
Three helicopters, two airplanes and 75 firefighters from the Orange County Fire Authority, the Laguna Beach Fire Department and California Department of Forestry battled the blaze.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known. Fire Authority Lt. Kirk Summers said it was not clear whether power lines in the area played a role.
No structures were threatened.
An inmate from a Forestry Department crew injured his foot with a fire ax, but he was able to walk to a medic for treatment, Summers said.
Mop-up crews were expected to work through the evening, he said.
