Closer Jeff Shaw would like to return to the Cincinnati Reds, who are willing to offer a no-trade clause this time around.

Shaw, 35, became a free agent when the Dodgers chose not to pick up his option last month. Agent Joe Bick has made a preliminary contract proposal to the Reds, who traded him to the Dodgers in 1998.

Cleveland Indian Manager Charlie Manuel, who was hospitalized twice last season, underwent surgery to remove his gall bladder.

Manuel, 57, had laser surgery at Cleveland Clinic and was to remain hospitalized overnight.

Free-agent outfielder Brady Anderson is close to signing a one-year contract with the Indians, a source told the Associated Press.... Reliever Steve Karsay, close to a four-year contract worth $21 million with the Yankees, had a physical in New York. The deal won’t be finalized until the results are known.... Reliever Jason Christiansen agreed to a $6.8-million, three-year deal to remain with the San Francisco Giants.
