Comets Edge Fairfax

The boys’ basketball season might as well end today because the standing-room only crowd that watched the final of the Westchester tournament Saturday night might not see a better game.

Westchester, the No. 1 team in The Times’ rankings, escaped with an 86-84 victory over No. 4 L.A. Fairfax when Ashanti Cook made two free throws with 10 seconds remaining and Evan Burns missed a three-pointer for the Lions as time expired.

Fairfax (7-1) trailed by 13 points with 3 minutes 30 seconds remaining, but tied the score, 84-84, when 6-3 sophomore Thomas Woods grabbed a missed free throw by teammate Fernando Sampson and laid it back in with 31 seconds remaining.

After Brandon Heath missed a three-pointer for Westchester, the Lions had a chance to take the lead, but Burns, a 6-foot-8 forward bound for UCLA, drove into the lane and air-balled a 10-footer.

Cook brought the ball up for the Comets and Kevin Bell was whistled for a hand check while guarding him near the baseline. Cook, a 6-3 guard headed for New Mexico, stepped to the line and made both free throws. Burns finished with 25 points for Fairfax, including 18 in the second half.

Hassan Adams, a 6-4 guard who has signed with Arizona, scored 26 points, including 19 in the second half.
