Pipeline From Highland to Brigham Young Intact

Trent Sorensen, Highland High boys’ volleyball player, has signed with Brigham Young.

Sorensen, a 6-foot-7 middle blocker, was a Times’ all-region selection last season after emerging as a top hitter and blocker.

Sorensen will become the third Highland player in recent years to attend BYU. Ryan Millar, two-time NCAA player of the year, and Mac Wilson also went to BYU.

Sorensen becomes the second volleyball player in the region to sign, following UCLA-bound David Russell of Royal.

FOOTBALL

* Tackle Charles Bungert of Moorpark College, a two-time All-Western State Conference selection, has committed to Baylor.

The 6-7, 350-pounder is a 1996 graduate of Camarillo, where he was an All-Marmonte League and All-Ventura County selection.

* Lawrence Wallace, who played wide receiver at Taft High and Mt. San Antonio College, has committed to Kansas State.

BASEBALL

* Chatsworth and Kennedy, preseason favorites to meet in the City Championship game at Dodger Stadium in June, will play in a winter game Sunday at 11:15 a.m. at Chatsworth.

Chatsworth will play its alumni game Feb. 17 at noon.

GOLF

* Lost Canyons Golf Club in Simi Valley will host the Dave Pelz Scoring Game Tour on March 7-18.

Dave Pelz, recognized as one of the top teachers in the game, defines the “Scoring Game” as all shots inside 100 yards, including putts.

Each six-hour clinic includes three hours of wedge play and three hours of putting. Cost is $350 per player.

SOCCER

* Freshman forward Emily Niven of Notre Dame High, who suffered a neck injury in a game Monday at Alemany, was released from Holy Cross Hospital on Wednesday night.

After colliding with an Alemany player, she was accidentally kicked on the head and knocked unconscious for seven minutes, said her father, Lloyd Niven.

A CT scan showed two broken vertebrae in her neck but an MRI and later CT scan showed no breaks.

“We are really lucky,” Lloyd Niven said. “I applaud the people who helped us. Both coaches were wonderful. We had terrific care. Everyone was helpful and supportive.”

Niven, a member of the State Olympic Development team, will miss the rest of the season.
