Stotts Earns Big Sky Weekly Award

Shortstop J.T. Stotts of Cal State Northridge was selected Big West Conference player of the week.

He collected 12 hits in 21 at-bats, driving in 12 runs with four home runs and two doubles, and scoring nine times in four games.

The junior from Hart High homered twice on Friday and twice on Sunday in a series against Oregon State.

Stotts leads the Matadors (7-2) with 20 hits, 14 runs, seven homers, 19 runs batted in and a 1.048 slugging percentage.

* Dane Sardinha, former Pepperdine catcher, is ranked the No. 4 prospect in the Cincinnati Reds’ organization by Baseball America magazine.

Sardinha, an All-American as a senior last year, signed a $1.75-million contract after being drafted in the second round last spring.

BASKETBALL

* Devin Montgomery of Moorpark College and Michael Schnyder of Glendale were selected Western State Conference men’s players of the week in the Northern and Southern divisions, respectively.

Montgomery scored 35 points in a 93-89 victory over Hancock and Schnyder scored 21 points in a 71-57 victory over Bakersfield.

FOOTBALL

* Terry Furlow of Palmdale has committed to Fresno State.

Furlow, a quarterback and defensive back, was the Golden League back of the year.

* Quarterback Kyle Matter of Hart and running back Tyler Ebell of Ventura will be among 12 players from the region who will appear at 7 o’clock tonight on Fox Sports Net 2 for the Inside Cal-Hi Sports signing day special.

Game footage and interviews will be shown during the one-hour special.

Matter was The Times’ Valley player of the year and Ebell was Ventura County player of the year.

Other players who will be featured are linebacker Josh Martin of Sylmar and defensive back Ryan Foltz of Westlake--Times defensive players of the year.

Quarterbacks John Sciarra of St. Francis and Rick Clausen of Taft, tight end Evan Allen of Hart, defensive linemen Kaelen Jakes of Valencia, and defensive backs Matthew Clark of Cleveland, Lee Marks of Taft, Chris Morgan of Taft and John Walker of Birmingham also will be part of the show.
