Kelly Fay has led Ventura (18-5, 5-3) through the second half of Channel League play. She scored 20 against San Marcos, 10 against Dos Pueblos and 26 against Santa Barbara, making a total of 13 three-point baskets.

“She really has carried us,” Coach Ann Larson said. “She’s not afraid to shoot the ball, that’s for sure.”

Fay averages 11.3 points and has made 53 of 146 (36%) three-point shots.

Ventura, which boasts the region’s most prolific three-point attack with Fay, Jenni Dooley (78 of 253, 30%) and Katy O’Brien (37 of 103, 35%), has 196 three-pointers.

The Cougars are 22 three-pointers short of tying the regional record of 218 set in 1996 by Crescenta Valley.

Ryan Frutos of Santa Paula had a quarter to remember Tuesday. With the Cardinals trailing Nordhoff, 56-37, Frutos scored 21 of his season-high 35 points in the fourth quarter, including four three-pointers.

Santa Paula won the Frontier League game, 68-64.

“[Santa Paula] is a very difficult place to play,” Calabasas Coach Russell White said. “It seems like the road to the league title always goes through that place.”
