SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Buena High, the defending Southern Section Division II girls’ soccer champion, won’t have to wait until the championship game for a rematch with Irvine Woodbridge, which lost to the Bulldogs in the final last season.

The Bulldogs, ranked No. 1 in the region by The Times, are seeded No. 2 and, barring any upsets, would face No. 3-seeded Woodbridge in the semifinals. Buena opens with Rio Mesa on Friday. Mission Viejo was seeded No. 1.

In other Division II girls’ games Friday, Marmonte League champion Westlake faces Crescenta Valley, Thousand Oaks plays Lancaster and Hart travels to Quartz Hill. The Indians will be without star defender Dee Dee Sanguinetti and midfielder Sarah Dean, both serving red-card suspensions.

Mission League champion Chaminade, a four-time section titlist, was seeded No. 2 in Division IV and could meet league runner-up Harvard-Westlake in the final. The Wolverines were seeded No. 4.

Louisville, the third-place team from the Mission League, opens with No. 4-seeded South Pasadena.

In boys’ games Saturday, there are several first-round matchups involving area teams in Division II. Canyon plays Rio Mesa, Lancaster travels to Royal and Quartz Hill hosts the winner of Wednesday’s wild-card game between Simi Valley and Ventura.

In Division IV, Notre Dame has a tough first-round game against Santa Paula, Mission League champion St. Francis was seeded No. 2 and hosts Cabrillo, and Crespi meets Oak Park.

La Canada was seeded No. 1 in Division IV and hosts Rosamond.

In City Section boys’ soccer, the Sunset Six, Valley Mission and West Valley leagues each had four teams placed in the 32-team tournament, but El Camino Real, seeded No. 1, was the only Valley team ranked higher than No. 8.

No. 8 Reseda and No. 9 San Fernando, which split games in Valley Mission play, could meet for a second-round game. The survivor would then draw El Camino Real in the quarterfinals.
