Free-Throw Success Can’t Save Vanguard

Vanguard had a good night at the free-throw line and a bad night from the floor while losing, 69-56, to Westmont in Golden State Athletic Conference women’s basketball Tuesday at Santa Barbara.

The Lions (14-10, 7-8) were 22 of 24 from the line, making 11 of 12 free throws in each half, but made only 15 of 53 field goals (28.3%).

Courtney McKinney made eight of eight free throws and finished with 14 points and Becki Huddle had 11 points for the Lions.

Meredith Shanklin had 18 points and Katie Hardeman 14 for Westmont (18-9, 11-4).

In another GSAC game:

Biola 65, Hope International 47--Visiting Hope International shot 27% from the floor and trailed by 12 at halftime. Jamie Harrison, Amanda Gilcrease and Erin Carey had 12 points each. Carey also grabbed eight rebounds for the Royals.

Heidi Hardeman had 17 points and Sarah Baird 12 for the Eagles.
