Buena Zeroing In, Beats Rio Mesa, 3-0

Buena High opened defense of its Southern Section Division II girls’ soccer championship with a 3-0 first-round victory over Rio Mesa on Friday at Buena.

The Bulldogs (24-1-2), ranked No. 1 in The Times’ regional poll, posted their 11th consecutive victory, the last eight on shutouts.

Natalie Sanderson, Stephanie Border and Ashleigh Garmon scored. Buena took 48 shots against Rio Mesa (11-7-2).

Sanderson’s goal on an assist by Garmon gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 halftime lead. Lisa Engel assisted on both second-half goals.

Goalkeepers Amelia Waltz and Currie Hunt combined for four saves.

The Bulldogs play Canyon in the second round.

In other Division II games:

Canyon 2, Arroyo 0--Laura Brown and Nicole Scott scored for the Cowboys (21-2-5) and Lyndsay Taylor recorded her 15th shutout at Arroyo.

Thousand Oaks 4, Lancaster 0--Brooke Bauer and Kaitlyn Kelly each had a goal and one assist for the Lancers (13-5-3) at Lancaster.

Terra Peraza had two saves and recorded her eighth shutout.

DIVISION III

Bonita 1, Calabasas 0--Lindsay Duke scored late in the second half for the second-seeded Bearcats (25-3-2) at Bonita.

Calabasas finished 13-10-1.

North Torrance 4, Agoura 1--The Saxons scored three goals in overtime at North Torrance.

Heather Sims scored in the first half for Agoura (11-9-6).

DIVISION IV

Chaminade 4, St. Bonaventure 0--Kim Taylor scored two goals for the four-time defending champions in a first-round game at Chaminade.

Candace Rodela recorded her 13th shutout of the season and Tara Donoghue had a goal and an assist for Chaminade (19-4-2).

Nordhoff 2, Gabrielino 0--The Rangers registered their first soccer playoff victory, boys or girls, at Nordhoff.

Stacey Canfield scored her 19th goal, Adi Miller added her 17th and goalie Nadia Osborn earned her ninth shutout for Nordhoff (16-7-2), which plays Chaminade on Tuesday at a site to be determined.

Oak Park 2, El Segundo 0--Krista Clinton and Allison Bernstein scored at Oak Park (18-6-1).

DIVISION V

Flintridge Prep 3, L.A. Baptist 1--Jenny Rowland, Sarah Smock and Sarah Sheldon scored first-half goals for the Rebels at Flintridge Prep (19-1-4).

Kate Boswell had four saves for Flintridge Prep (19-1-4).

Erin Esparza scored for L.A. Baptist (8-6-1).
