Chatsworth Starts Slow, Gets Left In Wake of Fairfax

Scott Johnston had 19 points and Shayne Berry scored 18, but Chatsworth High committed 22 turnovers and lost to No. 2-seeded Fairfax, 113-72, in a first-round game of the City Championship boys’ basketball playoffs Friday night at Fairfax.

Chatsworth (17-8) shot 33% from the field in the first half and was outscored, 63-31.

Evan Burns had 34 points for the Lions (21-5).

Fremont 76, North Hollywood 43--Josiah James scored 14 points and Ken Hauser added 11 for the Huskies (18-6), who lost to the No. 3-seeded Pathfinders at Fremont.

Washington 56, Sylmar 55--The No. 10-seeded Spartans (15-10) were eliminated in a game at No. 7-seeded Washington.

Reseda 71, Canoga Park 70--Sergei Lepiashinski and Eric Johnson each made five free throws in the fourth quarter and the Regents (14-12) held on in a first-round game at Canoga Park.

Reseda outscored the Hunters, 19-12, in the fourth quarter.

Lepiashinski finished with 23 points and Johnson scored 11.

Cecil Brown of Canoga Park, who scored 36 points including seven on three-point baskets, was held to eight points in the second half by a box-and-one defense that used Edwin Reed as the chaser.

Birmingham 51, Jefferson 48--Haig Tatian had 19 points and 10 rebounds, and Nick Halic scored 10 for the Patriots (10-10) in a victory at Birmingham.

Hamilton 72, Granada Hills 68--Ryan Hicks had 18 points and Eddie Degerman added 17 points and 17 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough for the Highlanders (11-15) in a first-round loss at Granada Hills.

Narbonne 74, Monroe 60--The 15th-seeded Vikings led, 49-47, after three quarters but were unable to upset the No. 2 Gauchos at Narbonne.

Ramal Goodrich scored 25 points and Tylon Jones added 12, but Monroe (11-14) was hurt by an intentional foul call late in the fourth quarter, which led to five Narbonne points and an eight-point lead.
