Newport Harbor

Coach: Jim Kiefer

2000 record: 5-18

League record: 2-14

The Sailors are inexperienced, particularly at the bottom of the lineup, but are strong up the middle and feature improved pitching. Chris Ward and Cody Forsythe, who struck out 13 in 10 innings, will anchor the pitching staff. Catcher Garrett Brant (.345), second baseman Alan Lone (.340) and outfielder Donovan Wong (.303) provide some offensive punch, along with infielder Mike Jones. The Sailors will need production from new pitchers Joel Brown and Shane Glenn, a transfer from Etiwanda.

Woodbridge

Coach: Bob Flint

2000 record: 14-12-1

League record: 9-7

The Warriors, who return five starters, should feature strong pitching. Bob Flint, who left Irvine last season to coach at a school where he wouldn’t have to groom the playing field, has expressed concern about his offense, though. Pitchers Bryan Beck and Mike Peck will once again work with returning catcher Bryan Martinez. Third baseman Ryan Cummings and utilityman Cole Edmundson are the other returning starters. Several other players have varsity experience, including shortstop Joel Clark, second baseman Brock Davison and outfielders Jeff Frey, Jeff Clark and Adam Augusta.
